In 1879, fashion brand Burberry made a name for itself by developing a breathable, waterproof twill that we now refer to as the trench coat. A staple for officers in WWI, it was the perfect solution for the damp conditions in the trenches--and the perfect way to protect themselves from enemies (by wearing colors that camouflaged). Since then, this outerwear basic has been lovingly adorned by both men and women.
This reliable and stylish classic is like an old friend and is a must-have in any closet. Shake off the old or invest in the new; the design has been tweaked (again) this season by designers like Alexander Wang and Chloe. Coats with exaggerated details like oversized lapels, pleated feminine vents at the back, belts and slouchy shoulders are this season’s must-have, but traditional khaki-toned neutral styles are never far away marching down the runway.
Feminine details are big this season, look for ruffles, frills and oversized belts and lapels. These details give the traditional trench coat a more modern edge and you’ll certainly stand out – in a good way! Silk trenches are huge this season and can easily transition from day to evening. Fashion brand Chloe’s recent interpretation plays on the design using multiple lapels, gorgeous silk fabric in burnt orange hues, slimmer fitting sleeves and no belt in sight.
