Beidahu is located up in the heart of the mountains of Northeast China in Jilin Province. This relatively new resort has seen a huge development and investment in recent years, offering slopes for all levels of skiiers and members of the family. It’s now arguably China’s top ski resort that can easily rival popular ski destinations in South Korea and Japan.
Dongbei (Northeast China) is home to some of the country’s most famed dishes, and warrants a short escape from the resort to try them out. Check out Xio Nán Tún（小南屯）in Jilin city for a great representation of the local cuisine. The Liu Rou Duan is a culinary gem of this restaurant, perfectly balancing a mix of sweet and sour glazed over battered crispy pork and vegetables. Dongbei is also the kingdom of Jiaozi, Chinese dumplings. Most restaurants here give their own take on the beloved snack, but our personal favorite were at Jiā Fú Yuán (家福园), a popular chain restaurant in the area.
With several ski resorts to choose from, we opted for Club Med, offering an all-inclusive package including ski passes and equipment along with daily entertainment. Their “Mini Club Med” offers various activities for children such as arts and crafts that make the resort a great getaway for families. The ski resort is just a short two-hour drive from Changchun airport and offers slopes for skiers of all levels and provides a less crowded alternative to some of China’s busier ski resorts. The resort offers cozy and welcoming accomodation, perfect to rest your limbs after a long day on the piste. Click here for more info on skiing with Club Med.
If you’re not quite at pro level or it’s your first time on the slopes, you can join one of the ski or snowboarding classes to perk up your skills. The resort’s experienced ESF French Ski School instructors are great for both adults and kids. We spent the morning falling on our bottoms and collecting bruises before admitting we probably needed a little more guidance. After, you’ll feel ready take a cable car to the top of the mountain and warm up with a mug of hot chocolate before skiing down the slopes alongside some stunning mountain scenery.
If you’re all skied-out, consider taking a tour from Jilin city to Mt. Changbai. This volcano situated on the border with North Korea is one of China’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. You can also take a high speed train ride from Jilin to Yanji, a town full of traditional ethnic Korean restaurants and bars along with a unique mix of Korean Chinese culture. www.absolutechinatours.com.au/changbaishan-tour
In the evenings, staying warm at the resort is a good option – with talented performers putting on daily entertainment shows after dinner, and Club Med’s all-inclusive bar. In the late hours party animals can dance and drink the night away as the bar area turns into a miniature nightclub and DJs liven up the dance floor with addictive beats. For those who would rather avoid dancing, the resort also features Karaoke rooms along with darts boards and pool tables.
