Do you ever get tired of not knowing where your makeup comes from? Have you ever wanted to try your hand at making your own cosmetics? Meet Severine Clement of My Beauty Farm as she talks about getting back to nature to create personalized cosmetics and the workshops you can join to make your own.

Where are you from and why did you start your business?

I'm from France, but I have been living in Shanghai for ten years. The business was kind of circumstantial. I started at home following an interest that became a passion and then made me want to grow, develop and structure it into something more that I could share with others.

Why cosmetics?

First because of my life-long interest in close-to-nature things and people. I started looking into home and custom-made cosmetics because I was frustrated by the huge number of products available on the market. And it was compounded by purchasing products that I didn't really know whether they were the best or most suitable for my skin's type and needs.

Has it been difficult to source your ingredients while living in China?

Actually, yes, as it is quite difficult to trace their origins or level of authenticity. I therefore import most of my ingredients.

What's it like in one of your DIY workshops?

In any given workshop, I can welcome up to seven participants and most are repeat customers. The workshops are very flexible and participants are able to choose two personalized cosmetics to make each time. I might have some people working on developing hand cream while others are making mascara or lip balm and still someone else could be making a cleansing milk! Workshops start at ¥470 and include all materials and ingredients. What is your favorite product and why?

Almond and Coconut Oils Face Cleansing Milk: it has an addictive rich and soft texture, it cleans and moisturizes the skin leaving it silky soft. In addition, it has an amazing exotic scent.

What is your favorite natural ingredient at the moment to work with?

Cacao butter. It's rich, super nourishing, has an amazing smell and is a great addition to winter cosmetic recipes.

What five items are always in your purse?

Lip balm and hand cream (homemade), bruch, reusable shopping bag, notebook.

Favorite place to travel for vacation?

My country, France.

Three words that describe you?

Conscientious, health, natural.

Guilty pleasure?

Waking up late.
