Hands On: Baking Soda Clay

An easy, hands on activity

by Parents and Kids | Tue, March 20, 2018

With this easy-as-pie recipe, you can turn your child into a sculptor with a little batch of baking soda clay. They'll be able to create whatever their little hearts desire, and small pieces will easily dry in just a couple of hours.

Baking Soda Clay Materials

Materials:

• Baking soda

• Corn starch

• Water

• Food coloring (optional)

Baking Soda Clay

Step by Step:

1. Mix together 1 cup of baking soda (also called bicarbonate of soda. Baking powder won’t work!) 1/2 cup of corn starch and 3/4 cup of water.

2. Stir over a low heat until the mixture looks like mashed potatoes. Allow the mixture to cool and then form it into a ball, ready for modeling!

3. Adding color – you can either add color during the cooking process or add a drop of food coloring to already mixed balls of clay.

4. Once you have made your clay model, allow it to dry naturally until hard.

And that's it!
