Great Milkshakes That the Whole Family Will Love

Get your shake on

Milkshakes make people happy. That's just a fact. Whether you're four or 84, drinking a thick, cold shake will inevitably fill your heart with joy. We took it upon ourselves to scour the city in search of the most delectable, delicious and down-right decadent shakes Shanghai has to offer.

KABB

Kabb

Making you feel like a kid again, the Avocado Colada is more like a smoothie than a milkshake, getting its creaminess from the great, green fruit that has taken over our Instagrams and our breakfast toasts. It’s a light, frothy and healthier alternative to the traditional milk and ice cream, but we prefer The Chocolate Spirit. This one will make the inner child in you smile – while thinner than most shakes, its chocolate banana combination is a fan favorite and is topped with what look like cocoa puffs, bringing a nice crunch into the mix.

Charlie’s

Charlies

Charlie’s have a huge range of flavors and fruity alternatives, and yes, I tried them all. They offer classics like chocolate and vanilla, but also mix it up with some specialty shakes such as mango, blueberry and avocado and cucumber. The shakes are thick and really creamy due to the vanilla ice cream base, full of flavor and perfectly sized. My personal favorites were chocolate and the mint choc chip, but the fruity options, which taste more like smoothies, are totally refreshing during the summer months.

Crafted by Bistro Burger

Crafted is the second concept from the folks behind Bistro Burger and, like Bistro, they offer some delicious shakes. Go traditional with a creamy vanilla milkshake topped with strawberry whipped cream, or order a spiked one from the cocktail milkshakes menu. We recommend the Frangelico and chocolate cocktail milkshake with Bailey’s – it’s a boozy, chocolaty dream.

Beef and Liberty

Beef and Liberty

Beef and Liberty have a reputation for offering great eats, with all of their patties being made fresh in the restaurant, and the quality doesn’t end with the food. We tried a couple of shakes while we were there including strawberry, which was fresh, subtle and smooth, as well as a great twist on a classic – vanilla with ginger which has a spice and a bite that brings a freshness to the familiar favorite.

The Bull & Claw

The Bull & Claw offer a range of totally decadent shakes which are actually more like a dessert than a drink. We tried the “Honey Where's My Comb”, inspired by Cadbury's Crunchie bar, and the “Shake, Rattle and Bacon Roll” which contains Reeces Pieces, banana and chocolate plus a side of bacon; a tribute to Elvis Presley. Both were equally delicious, and equally likely to put you into a sugar-induced coma. With a texture more like flavored milk than a thick shake, but containing whipped cream, candy, delicious sauces and presented beautifully, these shakes make for an amazing photo op and are perfect for sharing.

Price: ¥68 or ¥98 for added booze.

Gracie's

Gracies

Gracie's shakes are presented in a simple tall glass but the flavor is anything but. The mint choc chip is absolutely delicious and totally refreshing, whilst another customer favorite is cookies 'n' cream. The shakes are made from the famous Gracie’s ice cream, with added milk and blended up so they are really thick but drinkable through a straw, which to me is the perfect consistency. Gracie's will make a shake in any of their ice cream flavors, so basically you can have whatever your heart desires.

Price: ¥50-¥55 for a classic, add ¥20 to spike it.
