A new year is right around the corner, and you’re probably contemplating the resolutions you want to make. But seeing that the Spring/Summer 2018 (SS18) fashion season has just wrapped up, now is the perfect time to give your makeup bag a fresh start. The good news: 2018’s hottest trends boast something for everyone, favoring both the bold maximalist, and the five-minute-face minimalist. So have no fear, you’ll be able to stay in your makeup comfort zone (or step outside) and look fierce doing it.

What’s hot?

New York Fashion Week Models

Vogue tells us that for the SS18 runway season, “the make-up artists had one obsession backstage: celebrating the natural beauty of the models. A look that’s so subtle, it’s barely there at all.” Founder of Makeup Artist Sharry, Sharry Yeo, has worked with top celebrities across Shanghai, New York, and Singapore, and dishes that:

“the best makeup a woman can wear is confidence . . . No one’s perfect. We all have a feature that’s unique and beautiful. Don’t focus on concealing the aws, but take note of the best traits.”

Natural Beauties

Untampered-with hair, au natural nails, and ultra low-key makeup will all be on-point, a look Shanghai-based makeup artist and fashion designer Aurelie Huvey, of Mademoiselle A, can get behind.

“It means a lot that women can look beautiful, elegant, and powerful even without heavy makeup,” she says.

That said, plenty of fun was also had at the SS18 shows, with daring colors, bold liner, and eyelashes of epic proportions – ideal inspiration for your festive parties.

Minimalism to the max

Natural Makeup

Goodbye contour. In 2018, less will definitely be more. This look is all about flawless skin, subtle eyes, and a nude lip – boom: you’re done! It’s clean, young, and polished.

Step 1: Super natural skin is key, so start fresh and clean. Treat yourself to a pre-makeup facial to really bring out your skin’s natural luminosity.

Step 2: If you can get by with just concealer, do it. But if more coverage is needed, use a light liquid foundation with primer; it’ll catch the light and give a dewy finish.

Step 3: Rather than a blush or eye-shadow, use a wax-based formula, such as Mixing Medium Shine from MAC, to add shine – or a balm on eyes and cheekbones for a glossy sheen. Wear a slight liner or skip altogether.

Step 4: Go nude – on your lips that is. Try a nude lipstick or a sheer stain.

The “Twiggy” eyelash

Long Eyelashes

This may be the #1 makeup trend of 2018. Crazy long spider lashes are absolutely in; the chunkier the better.

Step 1: Curl top lashes. Starting at the root, press the curler down for three seconds and release. Repeat at the middle and the tip.

Step 2: Apply a coat of primer, then layer several coats of mascara. For an extra clumpy look, some can go from root to tip, and others by dragging the wand side to side along the tips.

Step 3: Wear under lashes (false eyelashes on your lower lids) to really nail the Twiggy look.

Reinvented cat eye

Wings have always been popular, but as we saw on the New York Fashion Week runways, a thick graphic, linear approach has taken eyeliner up a notch in the fierceness department. Combine it with heavy black eye shadow and a blood red lip for a grungy homage to Kate Moss (the rock star look is totally in).

Step 1: Always start with a primer to help set your liner and prevent smudges. For flawless liquid liner application, first use a regular pencil liner as a base.

Step 2: Use a stiff pointed brush to trace upper and lower lash lines with a jet-black liquid, extending the lines 1/4 inch past the outer corners of the eyes; be sure to leave a space between. To achieve that linear look, skip the traditional flick – lines should be straight like an equal sign.

Step 3: Dip a cotton swab into eye-makeup remover to clean up imperfections.

  • Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eye-liner, Black Ink, ¥140
  • LORAC Behind the Scenes Eye Primer, ¥140

The statement lip

Statement Lip

From two-toned neon lips to luscious burgundies and plums, SS18 has shown us that the possibilities for your pout are endless. And while convention suggests plain-Jane makeup up-top, designers have told us otherwise. At the Chanel Spring 2018 Ready-to-Wear show, models not only rocked bright cheek and eye makeup, they intentionally wore clashing colors (think blue eye-shadow with fluorescent red lips). The only rule: go big or go home.

Step 1: Exfoliate lips first by gently rubbing them with a soft toothbrush.

Step 2: Apply transparent lip liner as a base coat to keep your lipstick smudge-free. Skip outlining altogether for the perfectly imperfect lived-in look.

Step 3: Apply a bold colored lipstick to the center of your lips and then feather it outwards with a finger. Apply a second (or third) coat in the very center to get those faded edges. Finish with a coat of gloss.

Must Have Products:

  • MAC Lipstick, Paramount, ¥120
  • Maybelline NewYork Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds, Orange Danger, ¥55
  • Maybelline New York Lip Studio Shine Shot Lip Topcoat, ¥40

Technicolor eyes

Technicolor Eyes

Neon and fluorescents have offcially made their comeback, and they’ve never looked better. Designers like Tom Ford and Calvin Klein officially declared “safety orange” the new hot color for 2018. While the tribal makeup sported by Maison Margiela may be hard to pull off in real life, a simple pop of neon is equally as stunning.

Step 1: Apply primer to keep your eye shadow in place.

Step 2: To avoid a mess, begin by applying the lightest color first. Coat your lid with a light shade of the color of your choice (yellow, green, orange, etc.). Stay high on the lid (go to just under the brow bone) and wing the color out past the corner of the eye.

Step 3: Add depth by coating the lid with a bright, neon shade of the same color, but stay just on the lid.
