There’s been quite a bit of F&B activity in the sleepy little family village of Pudong of late. With a vast strip of restaurants recently closing down including the popular Hatsune and Blue Marlin (both trying to find new locations), a few new surprises have risen to give the locals something to cheer about. Between a vast array of restaurant openings and closings and the predictions of new shopping malls and metro stations opening, there's a whole lot going on in Jinqiao right now. The Shanghai Family team hit the ground to find out just what's hot and what's not with the new openings.
Kylin Lounge (formally known as Face on the Lake bar)
It seems this private little bar/restaurant on the stunning lake at Dong Jiao Hotel is still a secret to most people who live in Shanghai, and the locals seem to like their little bit of paradise just like this. But with a refurbishment, new owners and new menu, it’s not going to stay a secret for much longer. Situated on the lake within the grounds of Dong Jiao Hotel, this has got to be one of the most picturesque hidden little gems to dine or have afternoon tea in Shanghai. The menu boasts Western fair with a splash of Chinese locality dishes like the Deep Fried Squid with Seven Spiced Chilli Powder or just Grilled Beef Ribs with Green Bean Sauce. Kids are welcome, and be sure to spend some time before the sunsets to walk around the gardens around the lake, which as we can attest is one of the prettiest gardens in all of Shanghai. Perfect for Spring weather.
The popular Swiss Butchery of Puxi has made it’s way over to Jinqiao, opening up on Baihua lu and finally giving the locals some more options on quality meat and seafood. While the popular Yasmins sits around the corner, Jinqiao residents can rejoice in what may now be some healthy competition in butchery meats. On the day we went, the meat and seafood were in good supply. We purchased a variety of steaks, sausages, different kinds of fish and seafood and we were all very pleased with our purchases. Other local residents have also told us they were impressed with their cheeses, making it a good pit stop for all sorts of great eats.
The Brew - Kerry Parkside Hotel
Not new to most expats and locals but the great news is they have just had a turnover in brewmaster. Mr. Christopher Collin Bump has compiled a perfect beer compilation, which at Shanghai Family HQ we can highly recommend. It is composed of five beers from The BREW Classics (IPA, Pilsner, Razorback Cider, Skinny Green, White Ant), and three Brewmaster’s Choice beers. Regarding the food menu, we can say that the Chilli mud crab, and the New Zealand lamb were worth their weight in gold. If you like an atmosphere of a pub with great beer, food and live music, The Brew is the place to be in Pudong. While Kerry Parkside is not technically in Jinqiao, the majority of locals claim it to be so, and it’s so close to the fringe, it gets in on this particular post. The fact that the Kerry is so perfectly linked to the rest of the city (by having a metro station), makes it a popular choice for everyone in Shanghai.
Da Marco Italian
We’ve been getting mixed reviews about the opening of Da Marco in Jinqiao. With the beautiful space it has, the light-filled area inside and the possibility to sit outside during this season, it's disappointing to hear that not everyone was happy with the service and quality of food. While the spaghetti with seafood was said to be really good, we've had a couple say the pizza was not the best and when we visited, the antipasti was far from up-to-par along with the service from waiters. We're hoping it might just be the case of a soft-opening hitch, and here's hoping with just a little more time on improvements it could be a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon eating typical Italian dishes while enjoying some quality family time.
We have it on good authority that the chaotic yet useful Carrefour will be moving to another location in Jinqiao. A shopping mall is rumoured to be what will replace Carrefour, making this little quiet family village of Pudong look a little more like the city. Good news is, the metro line will also be connected to the mall, making it that much easier to travel to Puxi and Carrefour will reloate to a nearby vacant lot.
Daily Mall - Pines Replacement
Families are extremely happy to see their old grocery store location back up and running. Another super market has opened in the Golden Bridge Mall where the Pines used to be. So if you're still sobbing about the closing of Pines, there's no need to anymore. The convenient location of The Daily Mall is perfect for a quick trip to buy groceries, even though you are spoiled for choice, with competition from Times Grocery and City Shop just around the corner. Find it on Biyun Lu, just next to the footbal fields and opposite Dulwich International School.
