Meet the Team

Alex - Managing Editor of Shanghai Family

Alex is Shanghai Family’s Managing Editor, who started writing for Ringier as a freelancer back in 2014. With a BA degree in Travel and Tourism, A Level in Freelance Writing and teaching qualifications, she was also a former ESL secondary school and kindergarten teacher. She enjoys researching and writing anything beauty, fashion or wellness related – among other topics – and loves interacting with the growing number of Shanghai-expat-families. Originally from the UK, she was a journalist in Madrid, Spain, and a copywriter for a UK travel website before moving to Shanghai in early 2014 with her husband. Her free time is spent traveling, blasting out her favourite songs and trying all the dinner hotspots in the city. She also worked as the Beauty and Wellness Editor on our partner magazine, City Weekend.

Anna - Managing Editor of Parents & Kids

Originally from the UK, Anna moved to Shanghai with her husband Pete almost five years ago, after gaining her Masters degree in Creative Writing. In 2013, she co-founded a company with her husband and a friend and worked on the business until September 2016, when she became a mum to her beautiful son, Theo. When the time came to go back to work, Anna decided she wanted a change of scenery and happily joined the Ringier family to run Parents & Kids magazine.

Michaela - Digital Editor of Shanghai Family

Hailing from the UK, Michaela spent a large portion of her childhood years in Hong Kong where her love for Asia began. After completing a BA degree in English Literature, she began working within the publishing industry – for both print and digital – before eventually making her way back to China in 2015. In the last few years, she has worked as ESL teacher, director of culture and freelance events and social media editor for start-ups in Hong Kong. Now, with a strong background in digital content, social media management and teaching, Michaela has joined Ringier as Digital Editor. In her free time, you’ll find her taste-testing Shanghai’s food scene, planning her next adventure or performing precarious inversions in an antigravity yoga hammock.

Sarah - Deputy Editor of Shanghai Family

Originally from the US, Sarah moved to Shanghai after graduating with a degree in Communication in 2015. With her background in advertising and two years working in education abroad, she was ecstatic to combine her love for writing and her respect for the educational community and join the Shanghai Family team as their Deputy Editor. When she’s not sending emails or working on re-writes, Sarah is often biking to her favorite museums, exploring Shanghai’s thriving music scene or trying not to splash málàtàng on her white shirt.
